Scientific Fact – Zoology + Snake Behavior: Snakes don’t enter houses “to attack.” They enter for three reasons: food, water, and shelter. If you cut off these three, 90% of the problem is solved. Three scientific methods of prevention: 1. Cut off their “food”: Rodent Control. Snakes are attracted to rats and mice. They smell them using their Jacobson’s organ on their tongue. What to do:
Cut off any food source: manure, chicken feed, cat food. If there’s no prey, the snake will go look for something else. This is the most important point scientifically. 2. Seal their “door”: Snake-proofing the house. Snakes have flexible bones and a moving skull. If their head passes through a hole, their whole body passes through. A hole the size of your finger is a door for them. What to seal: Under the door: Install a door sweep. Snakes enter through the gap under the door. Holes: Any hole in pipes, air conditioners, or wires. Seal it with cement or steel wool + foam. Steel wire hurts them, so they won’t try to bite it. Window: Install fine mesh (less than 0.6cm) in ventilation and drains. 3. Remove their “hotel”: Clean the yard. Snakes like cool, damp, and dark places to hide. What to remove: Clutter: A pile of firewood, cardboard boxes, plastic, and sheet metal. This is a five-star hotel for them. Long grass: Cut the grass and leave a 30cm gap between it and the
house wall. Snakes don’t like to walk in exposed areas where they are visible to birds of prey. Keep stones and decorations away from walls. A very important safety warning: The “snake repellent” spray shown in the picture is 99% fake. There is no strong scientific evidence that it works. Snakes don’t have a nose as strong as a dog’s to be affected by the smell. It’s a waste of money. If you see a snake in your house: do not kill it and do not go near it. 70% of bites happen when people try to kill them. Close the door and call a snake catcher or the Civil Protection. How to tell if it’s venomous? In Morocco, this isn’t 100% reliable. Venomous snakes, like the horned viper, have a large triangular head and vertical eyes. But the best solution: consider every snake venomous until a specialist confirms it. In short: the picture is trying to sell you a “magic spray.” But science says: cleanliness + proper hygiene = real protection. The snake in the picture, a rat snake, is actually beneficial; it eats rats that carry diseases. Do you live in an area with many snakes? Or do you just want information for prevention?
