WARNING – DISTRESSING CONTENT: CCTV footage released by police shows Ian Watkins emerging

This is the moment a blood-soaked Ian Watkins staggered out of his prison cell after being slashed with a makeshift knife.

The footage was released following its presentation to a jury at Leeds Crown Court. Jurors are tasked with determining whether Rico Gedel and Samuel Dodsworth are guilty of murdering the Lostprophets frontman in an attack at the notorious prison in October last year.

Watkins was serving time at HMP Wakefield, having been jailed in December 2013 for 29 years, with a further six years on licence, after admitting a catalogue of sex offences, including the attempted rape of a fan’s baby.

The singer was arrested following the execution of a drugs warrant at his Pontypridd home on September 21, 2012, when a large number of computers, mobile phones and storage devices were seized. Analysis of the equipment uncovered Watkins’ depraved behaviour.

Rico Gedel, 25, also known as Rashid, and Samuel Dodsworth, 43, are both accused of murdering Watkins and possessing a bladed article in a prison setting, reports Yorkshire Live.

Gedel is accused of carrying out the attack, while Dodsworth is alleged by the prosecution to have “kept watch”. It is claimed he disposed of the makeshift knife — fashioned from a Stanley knife — in a bin in a recess area on the B wing.

Following the trial’s opening on Thursday, prosecutor Tom Storey KC presented a series of clips to the jury depicting events both before and after the attack. Inmates were visible on the landing area, with both Gedel and Dodsworth identifiable in the footage. Watkins, who had remained in his cell, did not appear on the CCTV until he emerged onto the landing covered in blood.

The footage, now released by West Yorkshire Police, shows Gedel walking along the landing on the same side as Watkins’ cell before Watkins appears just seconds later.

Dressed in a denim shirt, a grey-haired Watkins is seen almost stumbling out onto the landing. Two workmen passing by notice him, with one gesturing and pointing towards Watkins, who raises a hand to his throat before disappearing from view once more.

On Friday, a prison officer testified that he witnessed the gesture and alerted colleagues before they rushed to Watkins’ assistance.
